Brown Bear .223
Just curious if anybody here shoots the Brown Bear ammo. It's currently going for about $0.23/round at PSA ($115 for 500).

I should preface this by saying I've read the arfcom info and reviews on Wolf/Barnaul ammo. This would be just for trigger time at an outdoor range, so I should not have to worry about failing any magnet test. I'll probably buy some just to see how my AR likes it.

I see folks get excited when they stumble upon ammo (albeit higher quality US ammo) at $0.30-33/round, where this stuff is 25% less than that. So I was mainly just curious as to what personally steers you away from buying this stuff at these prices.

Not bad.

Aim Surplus has Tula .223 for $215/case. Shipping will probably be around $15.

Will the Tula pass the magnet test?

Lee Indy- 01-06-2010

use it. if you break and extractor replace it.

Tula = Wolf but cheaper. Steel case, probably bi-metal jacket. i.e. not passing any magnet tests

Probably the cheapest factory ammo out there though. Only thing I've found cheaper (in any caliber) is POS surplus crap that should be throw out...not even seconds or thirds, real bottom barrel stuff.

Tula is useless for me then.

magnet test?

I have 500 rounds sitting around ready to throw down range. I am gonna use it only for practice and range time. I have some nice 5.56 Lake City XM855 for sighting in the Aimpoint and irons as well as defense.

if i had to i would buy nothing but wolf. get like 5 cases and just seal it for that o crap senario. steel case just wears out your extractor faster. and unless you reload the benefit of brass doesnt out weight the extra cost. extractors are 15 bucks. a case of wolf is about 30 bucks cheaper than brass. you can easily get several cases down range before wearing out an extractor;

Joeywhat- 01-06-2010

The steel cases really have a negligable effect on the extractor. I know guys who ONLY run steel ammo through their AR's (and handguns) and haven't had premature extractor failure yet.

Some of these guns are 10,000+ rounds.

magnet test?

I do most of my shooting indoors.

Anybody know how these compare to Wolf pressure wise?

I would love to pick up a case or two for the wife and I to use for plinking but the LMT refuses to play nice with Wolf ammo.

Mostly failures to lock back on the last round and short stroking... Not really bad if you are only firing a couple hundred rounds at casual pace but much more than that and the issues start to surface.

Lee Indy- 01-10-2010

good for failure drills. i had a bad batch of blazer one time during a match and i just used it anyway had about 12 ftf s got pretty good at slap rack fire.

Wayneard3413- 01-10-2010

Yeah great for malf clearance but kind of a pain when your going out for a day full of shooting haha
