Couple Mag Questions
Got a bunch of mags today, 6 total with 2 each 10, 20 and 30 rounders. Only paid $55 shipped and the guy didn't know much about them. Figured it was a decent gamble.
One of the 30 rounders is a Colt, the other "Adventure Line, Parsons, KS". Anyone know anything about them? Colt has a green follow, but neither are Magpul. I'll probably buy a bunch of followers and replace them all.
The 20 rounders are completely unmarked. Look pretty standard, curved design, aluminum body, black follower and black finish. The seat nicely on a closed bolt when full, too. Is there a way to tell who these were made by? Is it also a good idea to replace the follow in these? I'm not sure if they suffer from the same problems as the 30 rounders.
Now the 10 round mags. They look just like these: http://www.brownells.com/aspx/ns/store/ProductDetail.aspx?p=8738&title=AR-15%20PLASTIC%20MAGAZINE. Look cheap, and WILL NOT seat when full. In fact I can barely get them to seat when downloaded to 9. They also have a hard time fitting in the magwell. You really need to force them in. I was thinking about plugging it to 5 rounds so I could hunt with it. Good for range use too since the outdoor range by me only allows 5 round mags. Are these worth a damn? They'd be strictly range use only.
I'd also like to refinish the 30 round mags. One looks REAL skanky. What's the best way to do this? I don't want to make them too thick to seat properly, but I want a quality finish on them. Preferably a cheap DIY solution.
The 30 round mags are all "good ones".
The 20 rounders hard to tell without any markings on them.
The 10's ??????????
The green followers are USGI anti tilt
As far as refinishing, wash them in hot soapy water, scrob with a scotch brite pad, let dry, lightly spray with satin black krylon
While taking apart the 20 rounders I did notice they were steel. Not sure if that narrows it down any.
Since I'm probably replacing the 30 round followers with Magpuls, does it make sense to do the 20 rounders as well? They look the same...do straight 20's use the same follower as well?
I still want to pick up a couple straight 20's, preferably Pmags. Haven't seen those in stock anywhere in 4 months, though.
The 10 rounders are pretty cheap. One is hard to seat since the feed lips are bent apart. Even when loaded the good one still bends the mag body a bit. Oh well, on the off chance I take my AR out hunting they will suffice.
Also, is it common for the mag body to have Colt markings, but the floor plate OK? Did OK make mags for Colt? Really doesn't matter, I assume both are good to go.
