handguard grip
I was browsing through one of the picture threads on AR15.com and noticed quite a few people wrap their off hand around the handguards with their thumb on the top and fingers underneath.
During my time as infantry, I never ran into this method being used or even taught. Is this some internet commando thing or what?
I do it, good control of recoil. I do thumbs forward if I'm using the light. Even with my thumb forward grip I've still got my thumb near the top of the tube.
i use vertical fore-grip with thumb break...

Same here.
I'm a Magpul fanboy, but I haven't tried out the their AFG, nor have I had a desire, now if they released a VFG soemthing like the TangoDown I'd be all over that bad boy.

Yep... pure mall ninja.
You will probably find that the same folks have a scar on the top of the thumb of their off hand from that time they used the hollywood grip and wrapped their weak hand around the wrist of the firing hand and got slide tracks across the knuckle.

Wbtrunx,
As you know just about everything they teach us related to weapons manipulation and tactics were WAY behind the curve prior to 9/11 and although it took a while it is finally getting better.
That said the military and LE world is still a good bit behind some of the quality training you have to track down elsewhere on your own or bring in to train at your unit level.
