Mag couplers?
Any of you guys (or gals) have mag couplers that you like or recommend? It seems most places sell the same fyberglass coupler, with mixed reviews. I'm just looking forward to future 3-gun matches, or as my wife says, desperately searching for ways to spend more money.

I'd rather run a redi-mag/mod before a mag cinch.

However I did see one the other day at a match that I really liked...looked real bulletproof and lightweight. I'll have to see if I can find who made it - I don't think it was from a big name company.

im not a fan of adding mags to the gun for 3gun. get a mag extender. run 48 or 40 rders but i dont do mag cinches. if you need to speed up a reload. practice.

Mag couplers have their place in a three gun match. The Firebird coupers are awesome as a mono pod.

I use the 48 round mag for big run and gun stages. I use the 30 30 coupers for stages that require a reload or have cover that I can shoot off of. The Mono pod ability is far more stable than a single mag. I use the 20 30 coupler when there is a very low port I need to shoot under. Using the coupled mags is nearly as good as a bi pod.

You can reload very fast with coupled mags. Here is a demo

personally this is the way to go. not packing around dead weight.

I personally like running a spare mag on the weapon not only because it is a bit quicker in a static range environment but once you start adding unorthodox positions or fighting from a vehicle and it is a night and day difference

When performing a reload from kneeling or any of the various prone positions it is MUCH easier when running a Redi-Mag/Mod

i run a mag on a side pouch and one on the back at a 90 degree angle. i just dont like extra stuff on the rifle. hell im even after a single cell light cause a two cell is to bulky. i carried a mag on the stock when i was an MP and that was just inconvenient. practice all positions and reloading from them. no amount of gear is a substitue for practice. im a bare bones kinda guy. about the only gimick ill have on my rifle is the bad lever but it takes practice to change your muscle memory to that so hundreds upon hundreds of fire one reloads will be in order just to get a new muscle memory learned.

speed is all about economy of motion.

im not saying that cinches and couplers and redi mags are a bad thing. just not for me. now quick mag on the vest is an idea i do like

Alaskapopo- 12-29-2009

Economy of motion is correct and that is why a redi mag or a coupled mag is faster. Less motion.

Here is a reload from the belt.

2.51 for the belt 1.71 for the couplers. shown earlier.

I have done a bunch of these at the range and the coupled times are always about 1 second faster.

Lee Indy- 12-29-2009

agreed it can be faster but my PERSONAL PREFERENCE is to a lighter weapon. i would use a redi mag before a coupler just cause there is no benefit to an empty mag hanging off the gun.

Alaskapopo- 12-29-2009

No problem with your preference. I can see that for a soldier as you carry a lot of spare mags around with you. For cops couplers are great as we don't have a good way to carry spare ammo off the gun. However my point was in three gun couplers have a huge advantage in some stages. Those that require a reload and those that have stations where you can shoot prone or off an object like a table. They are way more stable than mono podding off a single mag.

do not disagree. id opt for a grip pod before monopoding

Alaskapopo- 12-30-2009

In USPSA rules the grip pod will throw you into Open Class. Something to be aware of.
